MotionCam: Camera & RAW Video 9.3.0

MotionCam is an app that enables your Android device to capture RAW frames. Please note that MotionCam requires a device with good support for RAW capture, which can vary depending on the device. Due to the nature of Android, compatibility with MotionCam may not be guaranteed for all devices.

Note for MotionCam Free version:

• It is a stripped-down version of MotionCam Pro, containing important updates.
• Capturing Unlimited Raw Video Frames is always free.
• We have included several paid modules in the Free version in case you wish to use only a specific feature from MotionCam Pro.

NOTE ON COMPATIBILITY

• Please check the Free Version first for compatibility before making a purchase.
• Exynos phones are not compatible for video recording with MotionCam or MotionCam Pro.
• Any smartphone that cannot capture in RAW through the Camera API may not be compatible.

What is a RAW Frame?

It is a file containing uncompressed and unprocessed image data.

What MotionCam does?

MotionCam guides your phone to capture raw frames at specific time intervals such as 24, 25, 30, or more.

Why?

Having access to raw data enables bypassing the phone's stock image processing engine, which can lead to excessive noise reduction and over-sharpening, along with other artifacts due to low encoder priority.

How?

When you press “🔴”, captured raw frames are temporarily stored in the phone's memory while awaiting processing into a container named mcraw which stores lossless compressed raw data.

What to do next?

• Render from phone: mcraw to sRGB/LOG with H264/HEVC 8bit or ProRes/Cineform/VP9 10bit
• Render from phone: mcraw to DNGs for use with external software
• Render mcraw to DNGs or ProRes/Cineform files from PC/Mac OS using MotionCam Tools available for download from www.motioncamapp.com
• mcraw files can be loaded in Adobe Premiere/AE/ME without conversion using our newly released plugin available in MotionCam Tools.

Disadvantages?

• Capturing raw data consumes significant space, even when losslessly compressed.
• MotionCam allows using external USB SSD drives (USB 3.0) to capture raw frames instead of internal storage to address this space requirement.
• You will need to grade the footage yourself, as an additional task.
